Big South Conference Tournament Preview and Predictions

The Big South conference tournament begins on Wednesday March 6th. All games are at the Qubein Center in High Point, North Carolina. The championship will be at 12 PM on Sunday, March 10th.

Here are some teams to watch in this tournament:

#1 High Point : Led by its high-powered offense ranked top 40 in the country, High Point won the Big South regular season championship and will have the opportunity to earn an NCAA Tournament berth on its home court. They are a young and guard heavy team that lacks a big interior presence, but they can score with the best of them and with this tournament being played on their home court, I like High Point’s chance to win it.

#2 UNC Asheville : Unlike High Point, UNC Asheville’s success this year has been driven by experience and its 6’11 5th year senior, Drew Pember. UNC Asheville won this tournament last year and returns many of the key players from last years team, but the emergence of High Point is going to make it difficult for them to repeat and earn back to back Big South conference tournament champions.

#4 Winthrop: Winthrop is a senior heavy team, as they have 7 seniors in their rotation. They had a little bit of an up and down season but they consistently hung with the top 2 teams in the conference and I would not be surprised to see this senior heavy squad give it their all and possibly even make some noise in this tournament.

#3 Gardner-Webb: Gardner-Webb won 5 of its last 6 games, including road wins @ UNC Asheville and Winthrop. They have the strongest defense in the conference and have the experience and scoring necessary to win this tournament. They also won both regular season matchups vs UNC Asheville, the team they will play in the semi-finals should both teams win their opening round matchup.
